Aine O'Neill

BSc. MISCP Chartered Physiotherapist

Aine O’Neill graduated from Trinity college with an honours degree in physiotherapy in 1995.

I worked in the Adelaide and Roscommon hospitals in the orthopaedic department, before joining the team in the National Rehabilitation Hospital in Rochestown Avenue.

On completing the American board exams, I moved to Indiana in 1996, where I worked in a Sports Injury and Vestibular Clinic. I trained extensively with a top vestibular therapist for over a year, becoming a competent vestibular therapist.

I moved to Colorado where I was responsible for setting up and running a vestibular clinic, along with working with sport and work related injuries. On returning home late 1998, I worked in private practice specialising in musculoskeletal, sports and work related injuries.

I broke my leg in 1999, which meant a few months off work and becoming my own private therapist. During that time I learnt a lot about being a patient, having pain, not being independent, and experienced the joys and tribulations of rehab! On returning to work I had a deeper understanding and empathy with my patients which changed my methods of practice significantly.

I joined the Sheehan Medical practice in 2000, where I worked very closely with the GPs getting a better feel and understanding of local practise. I opened Sandycove Physiotherapy Clinic in 2005, with the idea to promote and establish my vestibular practice. While still liking and practicing musculoskeletal & sports physiotherapy, I began working a lot with several consultants specializing in the field of vestibular rehabilitation.

Continuing my education in Vestibular Rehabilitation, I also trained in Dry Needling & Trigger Point Release Therapy, Orthotic Prescription & Myofascial Release. In the meantime suffering a neck injury, my love and empathy for treating neck and head pain has grown. I love working with people, helping them recover from an injury or deal with a disability, gaining ones full potential.

Margaret Dunne

B.A., H. Dip., Dip. Counselling, M.I.A.C.P., M.I.F.C.A., M.C.O.S.R.T. Accredited Psychotherapist.

Margaret Dunne is a member of the Irish Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists, a member of the Irish Fertility Counsellors Association and a member of the UK College of Sexual and Relationship Therapists.

I graduated as a teacher and taught for a number of years. I trained as a psychotherapist and qualified from Trinity College Dublin in 1997. I joined the counselling team in the H.A.R.I. Unit of the Rotunda Hospital specialising in Fertility Counselling. I subsequently worked in private practice and in the SIMS Fertility Clinic. More recently, I have also worked in the Psychosexual Unit of the National Maternity Hospital.

Over the years I have found myself particularly interested in working with clients who have received a serious medical diagnosis or who have a physical disability. In my work as a counsellor I have seen and helped clients deal with numerous disabilities and diagnoses including motor neuron, cancer, M.E. to name but a few.

I trained in Boston, U.S.A., under Dr. Alice Domar, Professor at Harvard Medical School and Director of the Mind/Body Health Centre so I combine relaxation strategies and mindfulness techniques with Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. This combination has been clinically proven to treat anxiety and depression, prevent their relapse and raise self-confidence and self-esteem.

For the last two years I trained in London as a Psychosexual and Relationship Therapist because I saw first-hand the enormous impact a disability, injury or medical diagnosis has on my clients’ relationships with their partners, sexually and emotionally. Understandably, most people find this aspect of their lives very difficult to discuss. Having done specialised training, I help my clients to express, understand and move forward with this aspect of their lives in a warm, caring and non-judgemental environment.

The body wants to repair itself; that’s what it was designed to do.  Physiotherapy treatment merely aims to provide an optimum environment for it to achieve this goal.

Just as every human body is different, so is the treatment plan.  But if there is one thing we all have in common, it is our bodies’ innate ability of self-healing.  With the appropriate support and intervention to the specific cause of dysfunction unique to the individual, the potential of recovery and function is almost unlimited.

Dry Needling

Dry needling is an invasive procedure whereby a solid filament needle is inserted into the skin and muscle directly at a myofascial trigger point.

Myofascial trigger points may consist of multiple contraction knots which are thought to be due to an excessive release of acetylcholine from select end plates.

Radial Shockwave Therapy

Sandycove Physiotherapy and Sports Injury Clinic would like to introduce our latest device in accelerating patient care and recovery, through radial shockwave therapy.

Vestibular Rehabilitation

Vestibular rehabilitation therapy (VRT) has been demonstrated to be a highly effective treatment modality for most individuals with vestibular or central balance system disorders. VRT is a specific form of physio designed to improve balance, minimize falls and decrease dizziness by restoring vestibular function and promoting mechanisms of central adaptation and compensation.

Neurological Rehabilitation

If you have been recently diagnosed with Parkinson’s, MS, Ataxia, Cerebral degeneration, or poor balance, we can help.

At Sandycove Physiotherapy Clinic, we offer specialist paediatric physiotherapy treatment for conditions such as Torticollis, Plagiocephally, Talipes, and for babies suffering with Mildly Delayed Motor Development.
